Islands & Trains, a relaxing sandbox sim about building cute dioramas, may have a new demo coming soon. In Islands & Trains, players can decorate tiny islands at their own pace, adding railroads, buildings, animals and more.
The devs added a new demo just last April, which incorporated a wide range of new features. These included larger levels to build in, increased height, castles, and even tunnels that you can build on top of.
Developed by Akos Makovics and Fabian Smith, Islands & Trains doesn’t currently have a release date. It will be available on PC via Steam, where you can try out the current demo now.
Here’s the new demo announcement from the devs’ Twitter feed, which includes a small teaser:
The devs of Islands & Trains have smartly engaged with the community a lot, and the results have been outstanding. The devs have implemented a wide variety of improvements that address quality of life, technical hiccups, and content.
It has been a delight to watch Islands & Trains evolve so exponentially. True, the basic premise is hardly revolutionary. But the art design is friendly, soft, and warm. Further, it successfully captures the joy of miniatures.
Firstly, the texture of everything has an arts-and-crafts appeal. There’s also a terrific sense of scale that will please hobbyists and fans of LEGO Bricktales, which similarly has contained environments, and a serene tone.
Islands & Trains pays close attention to elevation, so that players can develop complex layers and angles if they wish. And although Islands & Trains may not boast a massive variety of decorations, it thrives on its simplicity.
It offers enough freedom and intuitive controls to welcome a nice ebb and flow of creativity. Given the extensive content that was added for the previous demo, there may not be quite as much next time, especially so soon. But it’s exciting to speculate, and that’s the sign of a promising gem.
