Soul Keeper, an upcoming RPG platformer from developer Baris Taran and publisher Yoto Games, has revealed a new gameplay trailer featuring different stages, combat, and more.
In Soul Keeper, players lead Felis, the protector of the spirit realm, on a journey to recover escaped souls. You’ll meet a range of ambiguous characters who may help or hinder you.
In addition to the story, Soul Keeper will offer a separate Deathrun and Eternal Sky game mode, where players can flee from Medusa or explore the clouds.
Soul Keeper does not currently have a release date. It will be available on Steam, where you can wishlist the game now. Here’s the full tweet and trailer from Yoto Games’ new official feed:
Soul Keeper has unexpectedly smooth animation that exceeds typical debuts, from its idle breeze to basic combat. Blood spatter and other defeat animations are detailed and unique, avoiding redundancy.
The platforming doesn’t look especially complex. However, the realms are well-defined, with distinguishable landscapes, colors and characters. The overall visuals are a considerable standout, with lots of supernatural flair.
I also appreciate the care to include so much verticality, when so many tiny indies focus on traditional side-scrolling.
The combat looks a little simplistic. Felis doesn’t seem to have special abilities, and it appears that one hit is enough for most enemies. The new gameplay trailer also showcases a lot of throwing knives. However, the Steam page mentions that the hero will need to buy these throughout the story. So, safely attacking from range won’t always be an option.
There may have been some kind of language barrier, with in-game typos abound. But the NPCs add plenty of lore and have thorough backgrounds. It also seems that players can affect the story with their decisions. Soul Keeper’s narrative emphasis is a fun incentive to explore.
