Beecarbonize, a card strategy game about surviving climate change from developer and publisher Charles Games, has released a new gameplay teaser for the Steam port arriving on July 31st, 2023. It originally launched in March 2023, and is available for mobile devices on Google Play and the App Store, as well as Itchio.
In Beecarbonize, players will encounter over 200 unique cards as they strategically guide society and industry, managing resources and contending with disastrous events in order to survive.
According to a new tweet posted today, Beecarbonize will be free to play, with “no ads or microtransactions”. You can watch today’s Steam release trailer on the Charles Games YouTube channel:
Charles Games has consistently released a variety of blatantly academic games that educate players in critical areas of history, or even discuss social systems. While the results are surely effective and commendable, it would feel on the nose outside of a school environment, and isn’t an easily accessible approach for casual gamers.
Beecarbonize has circumvented all of that, and its friendly design is absolutely certain to surprise you. It might involve some heavy topics, but the devs have condensed highly complex ideas into readily digestible card mechanics.
Actually, it’s almost like the devs accidentally created a streamlined 4X game, dominated by cards. Players make tactical decisions with a global scope and deal with grounded, surprising consequences.
Today’s trailer mentions that the central concepts are based on “real climate science”. But it’s notable that this would be a fun game regardless of the theme, and that’s the trick that makes this one so distinguishable from Charles Games.
The artwork is gorgeous, featuring dramatic scenes and comfy color schemes that are fun to discover. The visuals will benefit from moving beyond mobile, and PC audiences are certain to respond.
