“Neuroshima Hex” will adapt tactical combat board game

Neuroshima Hex, a tactical combat and post-apocalyptic game from developer and publisher Baked Games, has officially been announced with a new trailer.

Neuroshima Hex is an adaptation of the classic tabletop game. Players will battle for control of a highly thematic world, strategically placing tiles and commanding armies with unique abilities. The board game has been praised for its streamlined and tense gameplay.

Today’s announcement post on the official Steam page states that a release date will be revealed soon, in addition to “platforms and exciting features”. This implies that it may become available on other PC platforms, but console support hasn’t been confirmed.

You can watch today’s new trailer, which includes a gameplay overview and key features, on the Baked Games YouTube channel:

There has been a mobile version of Neuroshima before, but it turned out somewhat divisive, mostly for its technical shortcomings. A PC version of the tabletop experience is due after so many years.

The devs have an opportunity to smooth out quality-of-life issues, and make the game more accessible. However, in addition to successfully bridging tabletop and video game audiences, Neuroshima Hex must appeal to broader and modern markets.

There are some interesting features in today’s trailer. These include creating and joining your own matches, in-game chat, adjustable AI, and a much-needed tutorial. There are also a variety of armies, and some degree of recordkeeping.

Such conveniences should be enough for existing fans. But the visuals currently look a bit unpolished. They also feel more like a board game than a video game, where other adaptations like Gloomhaven make more of the medium.

So, casual video game fans might overlook this and miss out. But for those who want a breezy way to play a classic, Neuroshima Hex should be a breath of fresh air, and superior to the mobile versions.
