“The Fallen Crown” Kickstarter launches, aiming for Game Boy Color release

The Fallen Crown, a metroidvania adventure from Atavist Games and supported by Broke Studio, has officially launched a new Kickstarter campaign today in order to raise funds for a Game Boy Color cartridge release. Stretch goals include new areas, weapons, and more.

In The Fallen Crown, players are an undead warrior who must explore a mysterious Tower and its interconnected world, in order to recover memories and confront an ancient evil.

The Fallen Crown hasn’t confirmed a release date yet. Aside from the planned Game Boy Color release, a console or PC launch are still considered “TBD” on the developer’s official site.

Here’s the big Kickstarter campaign announcement tweet, which coincided with a brand-new gameplay trailer:

It’s always heartening to see indie games that appreciate retro consoles enough to commit to a legitimate cartridge release. The crisp imagery that opens today’s trailer was a little startling, but the vintage visuals of the game itself are a delight.

There’s a glimpse of the in-game cinematics, which are a particular standout. Cinematics have a very distinguishable attitude and pace on the GBC, where every frame packs in as much storytelling as possible. Drama was often created through slow pans, lighting, and striking imagery in a single scene.

The Fallen Crown’s brief shot of the undead hand in a desert, with a shadowy tower in the background, is very reminiscent of this. As the target demographic, I approve, and hope to see more of that.

And although the hero might look rather cartoonish, operating as a head, the world of The Fallen Crown seems sincerely gothic.

It also blends a variety of mechanics. Players can affect the narrative, combat requires timed attacks, and there are puzzles to solve. The Fallen Crown appears efficient rather than gimmicky. It justifies its GBC goals because its gameplay looks flexible and creative enough to please fans regardless of platform.
