Myth-vania indie “RIN: The Last Child” goes Gold, console ports planned

RIN: The Last Child, a fantasy metroidvania inspired by ancient myths from developer and publisher Space Fox Games, has officially gone Gold. This means it is now fully complete, and the devs have announced they are moving on to porting the game to consoles, according to a post on Steam.

In RIN: The Last Child, players must explore and rescue a mysterious world, crafting and upgrading magical spells to contend with dangerous creatures and the hero’s transformed siblings.

RIN: The Last Child doesn’t have a release date yet, though it’s currently slated for Q3 2023 on Steam. The original reveal trailer from April 2022 mentions a release for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox.

The Space Fox Games YouTube channel most recently posted a gameplay overview trailer last February for Steam Next Fest:

There are countless metroidvanias, and even more fantasy worlds that need saving. Fortunately, RIN: The Last Child promises the quality and imagination to compete. It seems like every square inch is packed with interesting details.

The visuals will certainly benefit from a console release. They blend a colorful and enchanting world with a slight edge. Areas glow, creep, and occasionally resemble watercolor paintings.

And although some of the movement shows its budget, there are many dazzling effects, both for imagery and sounds. The latter is a particular standout. Each environment, spell, and creature is well-defined with crisp sounds and personality.

RIN: The Last Child also boasts plenty of polished content. Today’s Gold announcement mentioned that the gameplay has been extended, estimating “around 12 hours”. There will be nearly twenty spells to unlock, and three possible endings.

RIN: The Last Child has a solid hook with the siblings, as well as an intriguing and surreal art design that should help distinguish itself from many comparable titles.
