Cease to Breathe, an upcoming point-and-click horror adventure from indie developer and publisher Sam Thul, has officially released its first gameplay trailer to coincide with a new Steam page.
In Cease to Breathe, players wake up after a car accident with no memory and search for help in a mysterious nearby home, completing puzzles and making tough choices that impact the ending.
Although Cease to Breathe does not have a release date yet, it’s expected very soon. In an official Steam page update from last month, the dev was aiming for a June release. Here’s the new trailer from Sam Thul’s Twitter feed:
Text-driven adventures like this are few and far apart, and authenticity tends to play a critical role in their success. As such, it is very fortunate that the developer’s latest trailer demonstrates very sincere passion and an understanding of their influences.
Newcomers who are seeking out a more pliable experience of classic Amiga games are likely to be pleased. There is a surprising level of interactive freedom, with hundreds of objects to discover.
However, longtime Amiga fans should still appreciate the art design, level design, and the careful language of the on-screen text in today’s trailer. The descriptions seem playful and there’s even onomatopoeia.
It would have been very beneficial to get a better hint of the in-game sounds or soundtrack, but they must be incomplete. Amiga sounds and scores have a profoundly unique attitude, thanks to a perfect crossroads of artistry and technology.
They also generate a lot of charm, and the dev has mentioned they’re a fellow musician. Today’s trailer music is oddly soothing rather than creepy or nostalgic.
Cease to Breathe features a very simple and familiar premise. But the first trailer is brimming with authentic fandom, accessible flexibility, and a pulpy tone. Fans of retro gaming should feel pretty optimistic.
