Mantic Games, a successful tabletop designer known for their combat-driven games and adaptations of the Hellboy IP, will officially adapt Worms into a tabletop experience.
Worms is a popular tactical and comical series about battling worms, and despite fan division over the latest installment Worms Rumble, the games remain an iconic and genuinely funny franchise.
Partnering with Worms publisher Team17, Mantic Games will launch a Kickstarter for their tabletop version in August 2023. Be sure to keep an eye out on the official Kickstarter page and support the team. Here is today’s announcement from Mantic Games’ Twitter feed:
Currently, the Kickstarter page doesn’t show much. But it does mention that fans will recognize some familiar weapons, that it will support multiplayer, and that the board game will retain the strategic center of the source material.
Worms is an excellent choice to bridge video games and tabletop, given its methodical, turn-based chaos, where watching the results of everyone’s carefully laid plans unfold is the central highlight.
However, while your tabletop opponents will surely get very creative, it will be a daunting task for Mantic Games to muster the same degree of flexibility and unpredictability as the video games.
It is frequently the overlooked minutiae of a stage or player action that results in hilarious backfires and consequences, so hopefully the board game can emulate just as much freedom to blunder.
This is pretty likely, given the ambitious volume of content in most Mantic Games products. Their work on Hellboy is impressive, with some incredible components, as well as a fairly comprehensive understanding of the world and characters.
Given the extensive history of Worms, there’s a lot to handle, but also a lot of ammunition for Mantic Games to create something equally jam-packed and engaging. Worms has also released many different elaborations over the years, signaling countless potential tabletop expansions.
