Full Void’s decision to use hand-drawn pixel art was very smart indeed. Although its imagery feels nostalgic, every frame is filled with personality and undeniable talent, ensuring a distinction from the countless indie platformers.
The stages never feel contained, but part of a whole, compelling you to explore and discover. There are many nifty techniques that give its world depth and lore.
Further, the art design creates a seamless transition between the gameplay and cinematics. All of the motion has an equal degree of detail. Whenever the character climbs or crawls in-game, the physics are easily detectable and immersive. This is certain to add a profound sense of urgency, and probably even more emotional investment when you fail.
Full Void manages to justify its nostalgia, too. The narrative benefits from channeling such a specific era of gaming and storytelling. It belongs there, and despite a few modern sensibilities, it could likely be mistaken for any of the classics that were actually developed back then.
For example, the soundtrack and sound effects resemble its many influences, but also fit Full Void’s particular dystopian vision. If you’d like to participate in beta testing, you can reach out to the devs, who will randomly select interested players.
