Smushi Come Home is the official new title for an upcoming exploration and adventure game from developer SomeHumbleOnion and publisher Mooneye Studios.
In Smushi Come Home, players must lead an adorable mushroom on their journey home through a forest full of light platforming and puzzles. There’s no release date, but it’s still expected this Quarter.
Following a Cease & Desist order, the creative teams involved were forced change the name of their game and hero. It’s always a shame when legal setbacks obstruct art, which requires a lot of personal sacrifice and exhaustive effort.
Hopefully, this ordeal alerts other devs to obstacles like this, and helps get the word out about Smushi Come Home. Following such an attention-grabbing situation, I’m now smitten with an indie I might have overlooked.
Here’s the official tweet and full statement from SomeHumbleOnion:
Smushi Come Home is also the perfect post for Throwback Thursday. This little game very much resembles the old school platformers I grew up with. Not only for its retro art design and music, but also its map traversal mechanics.
Smushi Come Home offers some familiar but highly flexible tools that will allow players to glide, climb, and break through obstacles. These classics are very intuitive and fit a cozy exploration game. They create a genuine sense of freedom, and will surely encourage players to seek out areas that would ordinarily be reserved for simple décor in similar titles.
Although Smushi Come Home has retro elements, it is not nostalgia bait. Its forest world and characters have the comfort and charm of a storybook.
Also, the mushroom theme is very consistent, and elaborated on well. Players can discover and learn about real-life mushrooms in the game, which is unexpected and adds a lot.
The game feels so full of warmth and optimism. The only addition I could ask for is the chance to explore this gorgeous little world with another player.
