Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara joins Kickstarter with adorable trailer

Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara, a 3D platforming adventure from developers Chibig, Talpa Games, and Undercoders, launched on Kickstarter today with an adorable new trailer.

The heroes, Koa and her best friend Napopo, will explore eight unique worlds and battle pirates in search of treasure.

Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara will be available on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and the Nintendo Switch. The latter two platforms will also offer a physical collector’s edition with lots of collectibles.

Although the game has already reached its funding goal twice over, the devs still deserve plenty of support. You can watch their new Kickstarter trailer on the official Chibig YouTube channel:

You might recognize Chibig for their work on Mika and the Witch’s Mountain, which is an equally cute and colorful adventure.

However, while that should be a casual and bubbly nod to Kiki’s Delivery Service, Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara appears to be nostalgic for just about every kind of 3D platformer from the 90’s and early thousands. Longtime fans of Banjo-Kazooie, Spyro, or Ratchet & Clank will definitely be interested.

Koa’s world, obstacles, and music could easily be mistaken for a genuine classic if not for the tidy and modern art design. If you want a closer emulation, Clive ‘N’ Wrench committed to that in full.

But Koa brilliantly elaborates on its island theme, creating a clear sense of lore from the broadest structures to the smallest detail. There’s a distinct cultural flair in every little pattern and character.

It really feels like players won’t just want to progress in order to succeed, but also to discover. And that really holds true to the friendly, youthful spirit of the premise about a thrilling treasure hunt. Koa very much resembles the kind of adventures your inner child would imagine.
